Ford 2.7 EcoBoost Engine Generation History

The Ford 2.7 EcoBoost engine has two generations. The first generation came out in 2015, and the second generation came out in 2018 with some improvements.

Here’s a brief outlook on both generations:

1st Generation 2.7 EcoBoost Engine

The company introduced the first generation of the 2.7 Nano Twin Turbo V6 engine in the 2015 Ford F-150. It delivers fantastic performance with 325 hp (242 kW) and 375 lb-ft (508 N.m) of torque. The engine became quite popular and was equipped with many other Ford vehicles.

2nd Generation 2.7 EcoBoost Engine

Ford introduced the second generation of the 2.7 Ecoboost Engine with the 2018 Ford F-150, which is equipped with a 10-speed transmission. Besides, the newer engine has an additional 25 lb-ft (34 N.m) of torque.

Not to mention, the first-generation Ecoboost already had the direct injection. The most notable improvement was added to the second generation, which included port fuel injection.

Other changes in the second generation are as follows:

  • A lightweight and better dual chain cam drive system for less parasitic friction loss.
  • An improved wastegate for more accurate turbo boost control and
  • Inclusion of a high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation mechanism, and more.

Key Features of the Ford 2.7 EcoBoost Engine

The Ford 2.7 EcoBoost engine is packed with a ton of features to offer superior performance compared to other similar budget engines on the market.

The Ford 2.7 Liter EcoBoost has the key specifications and features listed below:

1. Twin Turbochargers

Both generations of the Ford 2.7L Ecoboost engine feature twin turbochargers that increase the power output to offer enhanced performance. It ensures a broad torque curve and better acceleration.

The twin turbochargers also enable the engine to perform better at high altitudes.

2. Dual Direct and Port Fuel Injection

As mentioned earlier, the first generation had only direct fuel injection (DFI), but the second generation added port fuel injection to the engine.

The combination of DFI and PFI in the 2.7 EcoBoost ensures improved combustion efficiency, reduces the probability of knocks, and aids in achieving better cold start performance.

3. Dual Overhead Camshafts (DOHC)

The Ford 2.7 EcoBoost also features the following two significant points.

  1. Dual overhead camshafts to improve valve (intake & exhaust) control and
  2. Maximize power output and fuel efficiency.

It also ensures better RPM and reduces friction and wear.

4. Ford Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

The 2.7L EcoBoost engine uses Ford’s advanced powertrain module, which serves as the engine’s control center.

It controls fuel delivery, ignition timing, air-fuel mixture, and throttle response to ensure superior engine performance.

5. Other Notable Features

Besides these, some other noteworthy features of the Ford 2.7 Liter EcoBoost engine are as follows:

  • Piston cooling jets
  • Electronic throttle control
  • A turbocharger intercooler and more.

Ford 2.7 EcoBoost vs 3.5 EcoBoost Engine Performance Overview

The Ford 2.7 EcoBoost engine’s performance is quite satisfactory. However, to better understand the engine’s performance, I will compare it with Ford’s 3.5 EcoBoost engine, which features the same V6 twin turbochargers.

Features2.7 EcoBoost3.5 EcoBoost
Displacement2,694cc (2.7 liters)3,496cc (3.5 liters)
Block materialCompact Graphite IronAluminum
Bore x Stroke83mm x 83mm92.5mm x 86.6mm
Compression10.3:110.5:1 and 10.0:1
Power315-335 hp320-647hp
Torque350-400 lb-ft350-550 lb-ft
Max towing capacity10,100 lbs.14,000 lbs.
Max payload capacity2,480 lbs.3,250 lbs.

Note: Maximum towing and payload capacities vary from vehicle to vehicle.

The 3.5 EcoBoost engine comes at a higher price and is undoubtedly better than the 2.7 EcoBoost in most cases.

But in real-life performance, the 2.7L EcoBoost is not far behind. Price-wise, the engine has good power with decent towing and payload capacity.

2.7L EcoBoost Engine Problems & Reliability

Like every other engine, the 2.7 EcoBoost engine can be faulty for several reasons.

Some common problems with the Ford 2.7L EcoBoost engine are:

  1. Carbon build-ups
  2. Oil pan leaks
  3. The spark plug and ignition coil have low durability.

It is important to note that the first two problems are associated with the first generation of the engine. The problems are addressed in the second generation.

Besides this, the last issue is mainly with the turbochargers, which put extra pressure on the components.

My Choice! Although the Ford 2.7 EcoBoost engine has some problems, these are minor. Therefore, the engine is absolutely reliable for me.

Modifications for Ford 2.7 EcoBoost Engine

You can modify the Ford 2.7 EcoBoost engine for better performance.

If you ask me what kinds of upgrades I prefer for the Ford 2.7 EcoBoost engine,  then I’ll tell you that the following modifications will be best for your engine:

  • Air intake for better airflow and improved power output.
  • Downpipes to increase horsepower and torque.
  • Spark plugs for improved ignition and combustion, resulting in better engine efficiency.

Why did Ford design the 2.7 EcoBoost?

Ford already had the 3.5 EcoBoost but designed the 2.7 EcoBoost to balance performance and fuel efficiency. The latter offers a sturdier block and a lightweight design.

How does the engine compare to other Ford 2.7 EcoBoost engines?

The Ford 2.7 EcoBoost engine is designed for better fuel efficiency than the other engines. For instance, the 3.5 EcoBoost offers better performance but may also consume more fuel.

Is the Ford 2.7 EcoBoost engine suitable for off-road driving?

Yes. The Ford 2.7 EcoBoost is installed in various off-road vehicles that are suitable for off-road driving. For instance, the Ford F-150 is equipped with the 2.7L EcoBoost and the truck performs excellently in off-road conditions.

Can the Ford 2.7 EcoBoost engine handle extreme weather conditions?

Yes. Although the Ford 2.7 EcoBoost engine can withstand harsh weather, its performance may be slightly reduced in the winter. For instance, if you drive a Ford and complain that your mpg dropped by as much as 17 in the winter, I’ll say it can happen.

Final Verdict

Overall, the Ford 2.7L EcoBoost engine does justice to the specs. It offers a balanced performance with good fuel efficiency.

Twin turbochargers with improved dual fuel injection and dual overhead camshafts ensure that the vehicles offer reliable performance.

The earlier 1st generation had some issues, but Ford looked into the problems and solved them. I did not find any significant complaints about the second-generation Ford 2.7 EcoBoost models. However, if you find any problems, please feel free to let me know about your experiences.
